Each of these ingredients contributes to the blend's unique and delicious flavor.
The origin of shawarma can be traced back to the Middle East, where it was a popular dish among soldiers during the Ottoman Empire. The dish was originally made with lamb, which was seasoned with a blend of spices and slow-roasted on a spit. Over time, the dish evolved and other meats, such as chicken and beef, were used in place of lamb.
Today, shawarma is a staple in Middle Eastern cuisine and can be found in street food stalls and restaurants across the region. It is typically served in a wrap or pita bread, along with vegetables, sauce, and pickles.
The use of spices is an important aspect of Middle Eastern cuisine and has been for centuries. Spices such as cumin, coriander, and turmeric were highly valued by traders, and their use in cooking was a sign of wealth and status.
Each of the spices in the shawarma blend contributes to its unique flavor profile. Black pepper adds heat and pungency, while coriander and cumin add a warm, earthy flavor. Garlic and onion add depth and sweetness, while oregano and paprika smoked contribute to the blend's smoky flavor. Red pepper flakes add a spicy kick, and turmeric gives the blend its distinctive yellow color.
