Ingredients
For the Rice:
- 2 cups Jasmine or short-grain white rice
- 4 cups water
- 1 tablespoon Lu Bao seasoning (Oak City Spice Blends)
For the Beef:
- 1 lb thinly sliced beef (sirloin or ribeye recommended)
- 1 large onion, divided
- Half grated finely
- Half thickly sliced
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 1½ cups beef broth
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon Lu Bao seasoning (Oak City Spice Blends)
- Optional garnish: sliced green onions or sesame seeds
Instructions:
1. Prepare Rice:
- Rinse rice under cold water until clear. Place rice in a medium pot with 4 cups of water.
- Bring to a boil, then immediately reduce heat to low, cover tightly, and simmer for about 15–20 minutes.
- 5 minutes before rice is done, gently stir in 1 tablespoon of Lu Bao seasoning. Finish cooking until rice is tender and liquid absorbed. Remove from heat and let rest, covered, for 5 minutes.
2. Marinate Beef:
- Arrange thinly sliced beef on a plate or shallow dish. Spread grated onions evenly over beef slices.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours). This helps tenderize and flavor the beef.
3. Sauté Onions:
- Heat sesame oil in a skillet over low heat. Add thickly sliced onions and sauté gently for 10 minutes until golden brown and tender. Be careful not to burn. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Cook Beef:
- In a separate, larger skillet, combine beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and 1 tablespoon Lu Bao seasoning. Stir briefly to mix.
- While still cold, add marinated beef slices (with grated onions) into the skillet, spreading evenly in the sauce.
- Bring mixture to a gentle boil, then immediately reduce heat to low. Cover with aluminum foil pierced with several holes (or a lid slightly ajar) to allow steam to escape.
- Simmer for 15 minutes or until beef is tender and sauce slightly reduced.
5. Assemble & Serve:
- In serving bowls, layer rice on the bottom, followed by beef slices, sautéed onions, and spoonfuls of sauce on top.
- Garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot.
Michels Notes & Tips:
- Lu Bao seasoning imparts a savory Asian-inspired depth that enhances both rice and beef beautifully.
- Grated onions are a natural meat tenderizer and add subtle sweetness.
- Simmering beef gently keeps it tender and flavorful. Avoid a rolling boil.
- Perfect served with a side of steamed vegetables or pickled cucumbers for balance and crunch.
Enjoy
