Fire Island Spam Musubi

Fire Island Spam Musubi

Servings: 8 pieces Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 can Spam, sliced into 8 even pieces

  • 2 tbsp Fire Island seasoning

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 4 cups cooked sushi rice

  • 1 package nori (seaweed) sheets, cut into strips

  • Water, for handling the rice

  • Plastic wrap, for shaping the musubi

Instructions:

  1. Season the Spam: In a small bowl, mix the Fire Island seasoning, soy sauce, and sugar. Marinate the Spam slices in this mixture for 5-10 minutes.

  2. Cook the Spam: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the Spam slices for 2-3 minutes per side, or until caramelized and slightly crispy. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  3. Assemble the Musubi: Lay a strip of nori shiny side down on a clean surface. Place a small amount of rice on the nori, using wet hands to shape it into a rectangle the size of a Spam slice. Place a piece of Spam on top of the rice. Wrap the nori around the Spam and rice, using a small amount of water to seal the edges.

  4. Shape and Serve: Wrap each musubi tightly in plastic wrap to help hold its shape. Serve warm or at room temperature.
