Dutch-Style Carrot Gratin with Sara Smile Seasoning

Updated: Jan 2

There are dishes that feel like they belong to colder kitchens—where the oven stays on a little longer and the table fills slowly. This carrot gratin is one of those dishes. Simple vegetables are layered with cream, butter, and cheese, then baked until bubbling and golden, filling the cottage with the kind of warmth you can feel before you taste it.

It’s humble, comforting food—elevated by thoughtful seasoning and patience.

Why This Recipe Lives Here

This gratin belongs in the Spicekeeper’s Cottage because it transforms everyday ingredients into something quietly indulgent. Sweet carrots soften into the cream, onions melt into the sauce, and Sara Smile seasoning adds warmth and balance without overpowering the dish.

It’s perfect alongside roast chicken, pork, or served on its own with a green salad and good bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 large carrots, peeled and sliced

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 teaspoons Sara Smile Seasoning

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Spicekeeper’s tip: Slice the carrots evenly so they soften at the same rate and bake up tender, not crunchy.

The Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  2. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté for several minutes, until softened and fragrant.

  3. Add the sliced carrots to the pan and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.

  4. Sprinkle in the Sara Smile seasoning and stir well, letting it bloom briefly in the butter and vegetables.

  5. Pour in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for a few minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.

  6. Lightly grease a baking dish and pour the carrot mixture into it, spreading evenly.

  7. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top.

  8. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until the gratin is bubbling and the top is golden brown.

  9. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Spicekeeper’s Notes

  • Sara Smile brings subtle warmth—no extra seasoning is needed.

  • For a deeper golden top, finish under the broiler for 1–2 minutes.

  • This gratin reheats beautifully and is even better the next day.

How We Serve It at the Cottage

We bring this to the table straight from the oven, spooning it alongside roasted meats or serving it as a centerpiece with a crisp salad and crusty bread.

A Quiet Closing

This is the kind of dish that doesn’t rush the evening. It invites you to sit a little longer, take another bite, and appreciate how simple ingredients—treated with care—can feel like a gift.
